**UPDATE: Bluray ISO files are now available via direct download!
Well, this is it! After a LOT of trial and error (emphasis on error), I've finally finished the DVD and Bluray builds of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. I apologize for the wait, but a lot can and will go wrong when building a project with this much content! Anyways, the ISO files are now available on the Downloads Page! They are extremely large files...15GB for the DVD and 60GB for the Bluray. If you choose to download via torrent, it is imperative that you seed the file in order to speed the downloads up! I recently managed to make the Bluray ISOs available for direct download, so you now have that option available too. I did end up fixing the color correction for the earlier parts of the film, since many of you thought I desaturated things a bit too much. I also managed to de-bloom much of the footage from The Battle of Five Armies too. Other than that, the film is pretty much the same as the version released last month. Now before you start asking a million questions about what an ISO is or how to burn it to a disc, visit the FAQ page. Everything is spelled out clearly there, but once again keep in mind that The two ISO files will need to be burned to separate discs. YOU WILL NEED DUAL-LAYER DISCS IN ORDER TO FIT THE CONTENT...THEY WILL NOT FIT ON REGULAR SINGLE-LAYER DISCS. I'd suggest downloading a program called ImgBurn to actually burn the ISO files to your blank DVDs or Bluray discs. Here's the link to their website for your convenience. I am very happy to present this final version of my fan edit with all of you. This is how J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit is meant to be experienced! Enjoy and of course, please make sure you already legally own the original Hobbit films before downloading this fan edit!

The only digital copy available is the one I released last month. I won't be re-releasing it since it would cause a bit of confusion with conflicting torrent files and links.

Wouldn't that mean that there is no way to watch the final version with subtitles?

That's what it looks like. I would love to have a srt file for the final version (the video itself that isn't split into two parts).

I have converted and merged the encore-txt subtitles into a single, corrected SRT sub. Download off my Dropbox: tinyurl.com/HobbitSRT

The subtitles you added work for the first half of the film but are off for the second half.

The issue with combining subtitles from Disc One and Two is that the timecodes reset for Disc Two. So you would need to re-do all the timecodes for Disc Two if you want to make them work for the digital version.

If you download the .iso file, you can mount it on your computer using a program such as Virtual CloneDrive. That way, you computer thinks you have the disc loaded, and will be able to play it. As a bonus, you can even copy the raw video file onto your harddrive for easy viewing later!

Is there any way to use the Mega-file to seed, because as it is now I fear the torrent might just not get used by anyone because the other link is so superior at this stage (either way, I'll download it just to help with the seeding, feels like a good thing to do).

Unfortunately no. The torrent will naturally start out slow, but as more people begin to download and seed, the speed will pick up. Thanks!

Ben at this for 2 days and how the hell do you download the ISO's from the torrent? i get to the torrent and it does nothing from that point on the numbers do not move, zilch, nothing, notta. I'm an amateur when it comes to torrents so can someone please tell me how this works? I appreciate it as i really want to see this film!!

Actually yes. If you start torrenting, then download the files via MEGA and then place in the torrent's folder and force recheck, you will count as a seed and start uploading. That's what I just did with the DVD version and things are going faster for everyone! I wish I could do that with the Blu-Ray version though.

Anyone else having play issues? I finally got it on a blu ray disc and the film starts and stops endlessly with no flow; the film is un-watchable. Anyone know how to work these kinks out?

Did you actually complete the download? I know you said you were having issues with the torrent. Also, are you burning to a DUAL-LAYER Bluray disc?

Yes they are dual layer discs. I think the downloads were complete; they both showed up in the file folder. I had no reason to think that they were not complete. Like I said I'm new to the torrent thing.

The subtitles are in .txt format, which is not a subtitle file format. They are also improperly formatted, so they cannot be converted to subtitles. I could perhaps help you format them correctly. Or do you have working subtitles anywhere?

Hi everyone. Great work on the film Dustin, makes the film much more coherent! I was wondering, besides the most recent corrections, how much improvement there is in visual fidelity compared to the digital download versions? I imagine the blu-Ray version's bitrate is exceptionally higher than the digital version, but what's the biggest difference you can observe between the two masters?

As long as you have a standard DVD burning drive and a couple of dual-layer DVDs, you should be able to burn them just fine.

I think The Force Awakens suffers from the exact opposite problem of the Hobbit...not enough material. I was disappointed that there was little to no time spent explaining what had happened in the galaxy since Return of the Jedi. The film glosses over certain plot lines and characters, and I can't tell if this was deliberate or just lazy filmmaking.
Ryan
1/15/2016 02:00:39 pm
I think this was deliberate. The Force Awakens was trying to distance itself from backstory, politics, and the like to avoid being like the prequels. The original Star Wars just dropped you into a world and let you see characters and a journey they went on and The Force Awakens does that.

Thank you so much Dustin. To see all of the work you've done for the past two plus years on this - between listing the edits, posting clips, initial movie drafts, allowing for feedback, the trailer, the short, the side quest, the digital release (acting as our own theatrical edition of the film), the disc art, dvd case art, subtitles, and finally, the ISO files, DVD and bluray, all in one place, easy to burn onto dual layer discs. Burning copies to dual layer dvds was so easy. And now people have given subtitles for the digital release if you want those. I'm blown away by how thoroughly and professionally done this entire journey has been! As someone who has been following your site for over a year now, I say, thank you, thank you, and a thousand more times, THANK YOU!

Thank you, Dustin, for making the film I couldn't. THIS is what the Hobbit SHOULD have been. I've seen nearly a half dozen fan edits, and yours is the only one I agree with all the decisions 98%. If you were to make a version 2, however, I would urge you to cut the 'goblin mutant' line from Legolas in Mirkwood--as it is completely out of place in a Tolkienesque dialogue, and only acts as a set-up for LotR ("hey, Legolas insults Gimli, then they become friends"). Also, since you wisely cut the hot gold bath scene for Smaug, the scene of him smashing out of Erebor covered in gold is a bit of a head scratcher. I'd cut the exit from the mountain and go directly to "I am Fire, I am Death". Just for continuity. Otherwise, a near perfect edit. This is my go-to for The Hobbit viewing from now on. Thanks again!!

Thank you Ron! You're right about the "goblin mutant" line, definitely wasn't very Tolkien-like. I may have had a tough time cutting around it, I can't recall.

Just watched this all the way through with my 8yr old and absolutely loved the pacing and faithfulness to the books. This will be what I put on whenever we want to revisit the Hobbit. I was hoping you'd find a way to include the Enchanted River of mirkwood scene which I enjoy a lot, it explained why they are carrying Bombor on a stretcher in the background and has great Bilbo moments. Mostly I just wanted to thank you, so thanks!

Amazing job Dustin. I just finished watching the first half with my children and it is incredible. Please don't take this as a criticism, as I am very grateful for what you did, but I just had couple questions so far; why did you leave out the introduction of the dwarves to Beorn? I know it wasn't exactly like the book. But it as it is Beorn's appearance making breakfast seems a little jarring. Also, I was curious why you left out the enchanted stream sequence in Mirkwood. Those things aside I loved how you handled the eagles rescue sequence, in particular how they attacked the wargs. My son literally screamed with excitement during this scene and was almost overwhelmed with tears. He loved it and has not stopped talking about it. Your version was far superior than Jackson's. Also I might add that you did an excellent job keeping in certain tense moments that where not in the book but added to the overall atmosphere. For example Bilbo slipping off the edge of the trail while crossing the mountains was a create moment a lot of fan editions tend to cut but I'm glad you left it in. Thank you to you sir!

Hi Matthew, I really appreciate the comments and I'm so glad you've enjoyed the edit so far with your kids! In answer to your questions...I decided to cut Beorn's intro because it was too long, and it was unnecessary to re-introduce the dwarves to the audience like that. Instead, I inserted the scene into my side quest film "Durin's Folk and the Hill of Sorcery," where it makes sense to introduce the dwarves in the context of that story.
