JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit

New Clip: The end of durin's Line

After a good amount of brainstorming, I was able to combine the deaths of Kili and Fili into a single scene. I was really afraid of editing the Ravenhill sequence because of this issue specifically, but I'm very happy with how it turned out. Let me know what you think!

This isn't The Hobbit that we need, but the one we deserve.

This is excellent editing and I'm really looking forward to the final fan edit!

Nice one! It's a really creative edit to splice them together. Is there perhaps a way you could show Azog dropping Fili from the tower? His corpse lying on the ground with open eyes was one of the things I found very chilling. I know it might be hard to do since Kili is standing down there. Maybe it will work in this version, maybe it won't... But I'm already happy!

I really love this! Its great how you got around kili's death without including tauriel. I think you could remove tauriel even more. Just take out that whole look back after kili jumps in his barrel, and take out the shot of her seeing the trap door close when Bilbo falls into the river. Love what I've seen and looking forward to the edit! Also, I think showing the dwarves in lake town is better than trying but imply they are off screen at the lonely mountain when they clearly aren't

Very nicely done! Although I do agree with a previous comment about possibly including Azog dropping Fili's body off the cliff. As it stands right now, Fili just kind of disappears.

You and Sandro make a good point. I'll go back and see if I can add Fili falling off the cliff. It shouldn't be too difficult.

Yes it will be released via a download link, and very soon. As in the next day or so!

Dustin... Your editing skills are simply PRECIOUS!!! :D I do agree with the above comments about Fili disappearing... Maybe show Azog let go of him > cut to Bolg dropping Kili on the ground > then cut to Fili's open-eyed corpse. However, it is undeniable that the current edit is excellently done! I have no doubt regarding the greatness of the final product! Bravo! :)

OK, so I tried to insert the shots of Fili being dropped and the closeup of his corpse. However it didn't work well because:

1.) When Fili is dropped you can clearly see Kili below him
2.) We never see Fili hit the ground- only Kili's reaction as he lands in front of him. Without an impact it's visually confusing.
3.) Fili's dead closeup is very quick and was actually shot tastelessly. The camera pushes into his face handheld like a 1990s "extreme sports" commercial. It just looks odd.

So for this version of the fanedit, I'm afraid I'll have to leave it as is. But hopefully the EE will give us more to work with...

Good point. Ditto on the EE's additional footage. Here's to a satisfying wrap up to the Wilderland storyline later this year! :)

I have to say, this is shaping up to look really great! Do you think your going to release your cut before the EE comes out, or are you waiting until it's completely done?

Thank you! I will release a version of the fanedit very soon. It will be completely finished aside from color correction and the additional EE scenes from the third film. I expect this early release can hold people over until later this year!

How will it be released again? A download link?

I already have the LotR blu-ray extended edition. Hot popcorn/coke and plenty of pizzas to last throught the night. Even bought the Hobbit Trilogy (to make this whole thing legal). I also talked with some friends to make a middle-earth marathon. The only thing missing is your edit. We are waiting patiently. :D

This re-edited scene doesn't work.

It's quite clear, that Thorin isn't looking at Kili, cause when the camera looks UP, we only see Azog with Fili (and a few other orcs). We don't see Bolg and Kili, but Thorin is supposed to be able to see Kili and Bolg - how else could he react to Kili's death? It's not clear where Kili and Bolg are located. And there is nothing about the geography of those scenes that can justify the idea of Bolg and Kili being upthere with Azog and Fili. And therefore those inserted shots of Kili being killed by Bolg don't work - they are just awkward and misplaced.

Besides that: When Thorin shouts "Kili!", he sounds like he wants Kili to stop or wait for him. It doesn't sound like a sorrowful cry; that is: like Kili is dead. (His grief over Fili's death is expressed through his tearful eyes and his gasp moments before he yells after Kili.)

But my comment will probably be deleted very soon, cause Dustin Lee doesn't like to be criticized. On the discussion boards he calls me "delusional", simply because I love the Hobbit films and regard them as masterpieces ... in order words: because I don't share his opinion.

I would never call HIM "delusional" - all I can say, is that he has a different opinion and a different taste than me, and that alright. I don't understand why he thinks, it's necessary to be arrogant and patronizing towards people, who disagree with him.

Well, I didn't see the BotFA at all. I just couldn't bring myself to do it after the disappointment with the first two. So I've not seen any of this footage yet, and I think it flows great. I can't wait for the whole thing to be complete in the fall. Then I can see the movie I hoped to see in the first place.

The third film required the most amount of work for me, editing-wise. Watching BOTFA in theaters felt like I was watching a rough cut that wasn't even ready. I believe the Extended Edition comes out Nov. 3rd, so I'll have the final version of my fanedit shortly after that!
